Our Club In Action!

Here's what some of our members had to say about the experience of working with the Phoenix Crisis Nursery:

"The nursery was exciting and sad all at the same time!! My heart goes out to the little ones!"   ~Londa Spaulding

"The faces of our members got to me. We don’t know the stories of the children but we know they are at the Crisis Nursery for something that a child shouldn’t have to face. I love that the Crisis Nursery is a remarkably positive place. With every emotion we experienced, I saw our compassion and our commitment that we can make a difference for the kids and their families. Let’s do it! Did I say… I LOVE this club!"   ~Penny Babb

"The Crisis Nursery has a lot of opportunities for SI of Happy Valley and I look forward to each of them."    ~Marilyn Haney

January 2010 Meeting Events

What a wonderful Program Meeting SIHV had on Thursday, January 21, 2010! For those who decided not to venture out in the rain that night… An awesome presentation from Judy Register with Helping Hands for Single Moms. The organization is making strides in assisting local low income mothers! Thank you, Judy, for sharing.

And thank you to Margie Burke, SI Phoenix, for her insight into our club’s Past, Present and Future! Margie is truly a Soroptimist inspiration! She reminded us that SIHV has done so many wonderful things in the last few years, we can look forward to many more wonderful events and programs that are helping women and girls and it’s all even better with friends, wine and chocolate!

2009 Leadership Training Ontario, California

Ontario
Four of the members from SI Happy Valley traveled to Ontario, California to attend this year’s leadership training. Learning how each of us the ‘essential piece’ to a successful club, we attended workshops and listened to inspirational and informative speakers from our own Soroptimist back yard, from the National Association of Women Business Owner’s and from a certified trainer in “True Colors”. Our own District Director Penny Babb was ‘Solid as a Rock’ with her ‘Rock Solid Leadership’ presentation. And it wasn’t all work…it is always fun running into old friends and making new ones!

Bunco for Charity

Bunco

September 18, 2009
The sounds of laughter and the scream of "BUNCO" rang out all night long! That's the best description of the first ever SIHV BUNCO event that definitely put the "fun" into our "fun-draiser." Attendees enjoyed delicious desserts and snacks while participating in our raffle drawing and taking the time to wander around the beautiful grounds of the LandscapeMart at 8028 W. Thunderbird in Peoria, Arizona. An excited Amy won the major prize for most wins, while Linda won most BUNCOs - after an exciting roll-off, Denice happily won for most losses, and Ruth proudly wore the BUNCO boa at the end of the game! Congratulations to these fun winners! And a very special thank you to personnel from the LandscapeMart who generously donated their time and wonderful site for our event.

PHOENIX CRISIS NURSERY

2007 Holiday Shoe Drive
Phoenix Crisis Nursery In July, 2007, the members of the Soroptimist International of Happy Valley Club discovered that the children helped by the Phoenix Crisis Nursery go through an extensive physical, and are then given clean clothing and a brand new pair of shoes. It struck many of our members that getting "new shoes" is an experience that most people take for granted, but which most of these children have never encountered.

In November, 2007, the SIHV Club members decided to hold a "new shoes" drive. The members of the SIHV Club collected 136 pairs of "new shoes" and delivered them to the Crisis Nursery staff, in December, 2007.

The SIHV Club is honored to help the Crisis Nursery and all their children.

SATURDAY OF SERVICE - HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

SIHV participated in the annual Soroptimist Saturday of Service (SOS) Event on March 7, 2009 by joining Habitat for Humanity to assist in the construction of a home that is being built solely by women!

We started in the morning with an introduction of the various volunteer groups and then had the opportunity to introduce our very own Violet Richardson Award winner as a participant in the event! Everyone wanted to talk to her about what she has accomplished at such a young age. The women who were coordinating and leading the build for "our house" were amazing!

SIHV members learned several new skills including hanging drywall and using power tools. Can you say GIRL POWER!?!?

Best of all, we made new friends, strengthened community connections, and raised public awareness for Soroptimist International and SIHV specifically!

SUSAN G. KOMEN BREAST CANCER WALK

Susan G. Komen Special THANKS to all the non-participating SIHV Chapter members who supported the six Club members, participating in the Susan G. Komen 3 Day Walk to cure Breast Cancer, with the SIHV Club fund raising Garage Sale on Saturday, October 6, 2007!

The Garage Sale was a HUGE success that would not have been possible without the support of all the SIHV Club members.  The SIHV Club helped make it a reality for walk participants to meet their fund raising requirements of $2200 per walker.

The SIHV Club walkers raised more than $12,000 with the help of the SIHV Club!!!
